Molecular Taxonomy

  • Dr. H. S. Kathriarachchi is co-supervising a research project in DNA Barcoding, and Phylogeny of Syzygium spp. of Family Myrtaceae in Sri Lanka: Implications for conservation and sustainable exploitation in collaboration with Department of National Botanic Gardens and National Institute Fundamental Science, Sri Lanka.
  • Dr. Saminda Fernando and Prof. Mayuri Wijesinghe together with Prof. Gaya Ranawaka are currently carrying out a collaborative study on “Elucidating evolutionary affinities of Rattus species in Sri Lanka and their reservoir host potential with respect to pathogens”.
  • Dr. Saminda Fernando, together with Dr. Gihan Dahanayake, Dr. Ruwan Illeperuma and DWLC is involved in genetic bar coding of Marine mammals.
  • Dr. Saminda Fernando is carrying out a study on phylogenetic affinities of Sri Lankan bats in collaboration with Prof. Wipula Yapa and Mr. Tharaka Kusuminda.
  • Dr. Saminda Fernando is co supervising a project on Morphological and Molecular taxonomy of the Amphistomes occurring in the gastrointestinal tract of the wild elephants in Sri Lanka with Prof. Jayantha Rajapakse.
  • Dr. Saminda Fernando is co supervising a project on spatial and temporal variation of habitat relations and genetic variation in elephants in Maduru Oya National Park with Dr. Kalinga Padmalal.
  • Prof. Mayuri Wijesinghe together with Dr. Saminda Fernando and other collaborators is engaged in a study that attempts to trace the affinities of the wild buffalo in Sri Lanka. (Nilupa Vidanapathirana, Department of Zoology & Environment Sciences, University of Colombo: Graduate student).
